FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS

1. When are elections held?

Under the Texas Election Code, with very few exceptions, elections in Texas must be held on the two specified uniform election dates. These are the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November and the second Saturday in May. The general primary election is the first Tuesday in March in even-numbered years, and any necessary runoff election is the second Tuesday in April following the general primary election.

2. When do we vote for candidates for precinct, county, district, state, and federal offices?

This election is held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even-numbered years.

3. When do we vote for candidates for city and school district offices?

Cities, with the exception of the city of Horseshoe Bay, and school districts within Burnet County have fixed their regular, general elections for the second Saturday in May. The city of Horseshoe Bay has its general election on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

4. When do we vote for candidates for the Central Texas Groundwater Conservation District?

The regular, general election of the District is the second Saturday in May of even-numbered years.

5. When are constitutional amendment elections held?

Constitutional amendment elections are usually held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of odd-numbered years, following the adjournment of the Texas Legislature.

6. Where do I go to vote on Election Day?

Your voter registration certificate contains a number in the box entitled "Prec. No." This is your voting precinct for precinct, county, district, state, and federal elections, and there is a polling location for Election Day assigned to each voting precinct. A list of voting precincts (23) and their associated polling locations is shown on this website under "Polling Locations on Election Day." Or you may call the Elections Administrator at (512) 715-5288 for your polling location.

Generally speaking, on Primary Election Day, the Republican and Democratic parties share the regular 23 county polling locations. However, at least 30 days in advance of the Primary, a list of the voting precincts and their associated polling locations will be shown on this website. Or you may call the Elections Administrator at (512) 715-5288.

For the last two Primary Runoff Elections, the voting precincts were consolidated down to four, matching each of the four County Commissioners precincts as follows: voting precincts 1,3,4,5,7,8,9, and 11 voted at the First Lutheran Church in Burnet; voting precincts 2,13,14,15,16,17, and 23 voted at the main Burnet Courthouse; voting precincts 6,10,12, and 20 voted at the Church of Christ in Marble Falls; and voting precincts 18,19, 21 and 22 voted at the Marble Falls Courthouse Annex.

Historically, the Burnet school district has used seven polling locations, as follows, based on the county voting precincts: the main Burnet Courthouse (Burnet County voting precincts 1,2,3,8,9,17,20, and 23), the American Legion Hall in Bertram (Burnet County voting precincts 10,12, and 13), the Briggs Schoolhouse (Burnet County voting precincts 15 and 16 and Williamson County voting precincts 206,207,258, and 310), Cassie Community Center (Burnet County voting precinct 7), Silver Creek Fire Hall (Burnet County voting precincts 4 and 5), Lake Victor Community Center (Burnet County voting precincts 11 and 14), and the Lakeshore Library in Llano County (Llano County voting precincts 203, 204, and 205).

Historically, the Marble Falls school district has used five polling locations, as follows, based on the county voting precincts: Smithwick Community Center (Burnet County voting precinct 6 and Travis County voting precinct 371), Highland Haven Community Center (Burnet County voting precinct 9), Granite Shoals Community Center (Burnet County voting precinct 18), Marble Falls Courthouse Annex (Burnet County voting precincts 19,20, and 22), and Spicewood Elementary School (Burnet County voting precinct 21 and Travis County voting precinct 308).

In the recent past, the following cities have utilized the following polling locations (each of them has only one polling location):

Bertram American Legion Hall, Bertram

Burnet Main Courthouse, Burnet

Marble Falls Courthouse Annex, Cottonwood Shores

Granite Shoals Community Center, Granite Shoals

Highland Haven Community Center, Highland Haven

Marble Falls Courthouse Annex, Marble Falls

Marble Falls Courthouse Annex, Meadowlakes

The cities and school districts will post notices of polling locations on the bulletin board where they post notices of city council or school board meetings; polling locations will be published in the newspapers shortly before the elections; and we generally list the polling locations on this website about 30 days before Election Day. Or you may call the Elections Administrator for the polling locations (512) 715-5288.

Since its creation, the Groundwater District has held only one election, in which it utilized all 23 regular county voting precincts. It is likely that for future elections, the directors of the Groundwater District will designate polling locations so as to share them with entities conducting elections at the same time. Such polling locations will be listed on our website about 30 days before Election Day. Or you may call the Elections Administrator for the polling locations (512) 715-5288.

7. Where do I go to vote early?

For the November elections conducted by the Elections Administrator - federal, state, and local candidates in even-numbered years and constitutional amendments in odd-numbered years - and for any election called by the Burnet County Judge for the second Saturday in May, the early voting locations will be:

The main Burnet County Courthouse, on the Square, 220 S. Pierce St., Burnet, TX

The Marble Falls Courthouse Annex, 810 Steve Hawkins Pkwy., Marble Falls, TX, just south of the bridge, off the east side of Hwy 281

Any Burnet County registrered voter may vote at either early voting location during early voting. (Remember that on Election Day, you may vote only in the voting precinct that the Voter Registrar's records show you to be in.)

For the May elections held by the cities and school distrits, if they hold joint elections, they will probably use the same early voting locations utilized by the Elections Administrator. If only the cities hold May elections, early voting wil be conducted in a location within each city. Call the city secretaries for location and times or check the website 20 days before Election Day.

8. When is early voting?

All elections in Texas must be preceded by an early voting period. Before the November election date and for the Primary election date, early voting starts 17 days before Election Day and ends on the fourth day before Election Day. Before the May election date, early voting starts 12 days before Election Day and ends on the fourth day before Election Day. State holidays may delay the start of early voting, so double check the website 20 days before Election Day to get the correct early voting schedule.

9. What if I move?

If a voter moves outside of Burnet County, he or she may no longer vote in Burnet County. He or she must re-register to vote in his or her new county. If a voter moves outside of the school district or outside of a city, he or she may no longer vote in that school district or city.

If a voter moves within Burnet County, but outside of his or her current voting precinct, if he or she fails to change his or her address with the Voter Registrar at least 30 days before an election, he or she must vote at his or her old polling location. He or she should complete a "statement of residence" form at the old polling location so that he or she will be transferred to the new polling location for the next election. If there are any questions concerning the appropriate Election Day polling location, call the Elections Administrator (512) 715-5288. During early voting, it does not matter if you have moved within Burnet County, you will be given whatever ballot is appropriate when you vote at the early voting location.

10. Who orders elections?

The Texas governor orders each general election for officers of the state government, members of the United States Congress from Texas, and electors for president and vice-president of the United States, each election on a proposed constitutional amendment, and each special election to fill a vacancy in the legislature or in congress.

The county judge orders the general election for officers of the county government.

The governing body of a political subdivision in Burnet County orders the general election for its elective offices.

11. Who conducts the elections in Burnet County?

The Burnet County Elections Administrator is the county elections officer and conducts the elections ordered by the governor and by the county judge.

The Elections Administrator is also authorized to enter into election contracts with other political subdivisions located partially or wholly within the county. The Elections Administrator enters contracts with most cities and school districts in Burnet County to conduct elections on their behalf.
