Stringtown Cemetery Preservation
The Burnet County Historical Commission is excited to be working on a project to help preserve the historic Stringtown Cemetery.
The Stringtown Cemetery, situated approximately five miles south of Bertram in Burnet County, Texas, stands as the lone testament to the freedom colony, Stringtown, established in the wake of the Civil War. Formerly enslaved individuals founded Stringtown shortly after Emancipation. The settlement was located on the eastern part of the German town of Oatmeal, and is an important, yet undertold chapter of Burnet County history.
Thanks to a Certified Local Government (CLG) grant, we’re learning more about the Stringtown community and the families who once called it home.
If you have information about the individuals buried in the cemetery or are a descendant, please contact the Commission.
Fall 2025 Update
This fall brought exciting progress! Thomas Ryan McAnally, a young man working toward his Eagle Scout designation, partnered with the Commission to complete a major cleanup and improvement effort at the cemetery. In September 2025, Thomas and several other Scouts, under the guidance of Commission members, cleared overgrown brush, created a mulch pathway, and installed two benches to make the site more welcoming for visitors.
Thank you to the Scouts for supporting this community project!
